When water gets out of a channel, it creates a flood. When a flood occurs, some of the water flows across the flood plain. Water moves slower across a flood plain than in a channel. This causes sediment to be deposited on a flood plain. In many areas of the world, people have used flood plains to grow their food, because the sediment has many nutrients that helps the crops grow.
